FESTA DO JAZZ CELEBRATES ITS 20 TH ANNIVERSARY

This year’s edition of the biggest Portuguese jazz festival highlights the uninterrupted work of two decades, bringing together different audiences, agents, promoters, researchers, music professionals and jazz students from all over Portugal.

For this special occasion there can only be a very special program, spanning across 3 iconic venues in the Lisbon Belém area, each unique in its own right: the architecturally stunning CCB – Centro Cultural de Belém, the historic Picadeiro do Antigo Museu dos Coches and the eclectic book shop and event space Ler Devargar at LX Factory.

Along the last 20 years, Festa do Jazz has established itself as the biggest and most authentic platform for Portuguese jazz, having created countless unique moments as an incubator for revealing new talent as well as a platform for revealing new fresh approaches and projects by already established jazz musicians.

Corresponding to the festival’s mission, this year’s programme once again brings together very different expressions of improvised music in Portugal while actively working on inclusion. After 20 years, this edition’s programming is more aware than ever of the importance of female artists in the festival programme. Reaching almost 50% of the groups at Festa do Jazz being female-led or fully female, the festival supports the cause of bringing women to the forefront of Portuguese jazz.

Despite its clear focus on Portugal and Portuguese jazz, Festa do Jazz continues to promote encounters of Portuguese musicians with musicians from other European countries in the current edition. And despite its focus on Portugal as a country, Festa do Jazz is also a festival that is a quintessential part of the cultural fabric of Lisbon, it’s host city from the very beginning. Joining these two directions, the international outlook as well as the nod to the home city, Festa do Jazz will celebrate its opening concert by extending an invitation to communities from all over Lisbon to join in this year’s celebration with Hamburg-based Trilok Gurtu, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Yuri Daniel and guests from the Portuguese jazz scene.
